Change is not difficult. We make it difficult
Change is elend difficult. We make it difficultChange is not difficult. We make it difficultWe are more afraid of change than we shouldbe.Resisting change wont make it disappear It will make things worse. What we resist, persists.Resistance is a signal, not a natural behavior. We must listen to what its trying to tell us, instead of turning it into a paralyzing sign.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreLao Tzu summed that up perfectly,Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Dont resist them that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way theylike. As a society, we screwed up ur relationship with change. Im not saying its easy. But treating it as the enemy, rather than ur ally, doesnt help. Change is our natural state of being. By focusing on what we can control, it will feel less stressful and more comfortable to achieve .Change has a badrapWe fear what change can do to us, instead of thinking about what we can do because of it.Experts love making us feel we are facing a crisis The acceleration of change creates anxiety and stress. The Chinese word for crisis is danger at the point of juncture Consultants present change as a life-or-death situation. While this approach might benefit their business organizations get scared and hire them to help its intimidating people.Change is a continuum, an evolution. So, why do we love to portray it as something threatening thats coming to get us?Inthis well-researched essay,Alex Murrellmakes a strong case the pace of change is not accelerating, as everyone claims. As the author explains, The feeling that we are being carried along by an uncontrollable current of change is not unique to verlottern times. Experts said that change was accelerating in 1900. They also said it in 1920. In 1940, in 1960, in 1980 and 2000.The article explains how the belief that we live i n an era of mind-boggling economic upheaval and change is unfounded Research by various economists shows a decades-long slowdown in almost every indicator of business dynamism.Change orDieThinking in binary terms doesnt help.Weve turned change into a dangerous species It feels like an enemy thats ready to hunt us down. Rather than an ally that can help us grow, we are afraid it will wipe us off the face of the earth. We need to get past the life-or-death perspective. Moving beyond our comfort zone shouldnt be stressful or dangerous its usually safer than we think.Thats the mistake many people make theres an intermediate space between the comfort zone and the dangerous zone, asI wrote here. Personal growth happens in this temporary space called theLearning Zone. Only by crossing the line between certainty and familiarity, you can grow.Leaving our comfort zone is not a radical decision though. You can always take baby steps and explore. We abandon the comfort zone temporarily, not fore ver. The secret lies infinding the balancebetween new and familiar things.Change doesnt need to cause harm. You can stretch beyond your comfort zone without putting your life at risk.We are more adaptive than wethinkOur brain is like a muscle the more you exercise it, the fitter it becomes. When talking about resistance to change, most people refer to our reptilian brain. The fight-or-flight response is a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something terrifying. The release of hormones prepares your body to either stay and deal with a threat or to run away. But thats just one side of the story.Neurons that fire together wire together. DonaldHebbWhen brain cells communicate frequently, the connection between them strengthens. Messages that travel the same pathway in the brain over and over begin to transmit faster and faster. Training and practice can encourage our neurons to fire together.Playing tennis for the first time can be intimidating. But, the more you practi ce hitting the ball, the more natural it becomes.Change makes us feel off-center our initial response is to return to the way things were. But, we are much more adaptive and resilient than we think. As Confucius said, Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.A groundbreaking studyon resilience busted the myth that a troubled childhood leaves you emotionally crippled forever.Psychologist Emmy Werner spent 40 years studying kids from impoverished, unstable families. In spite of the adverse environment, 30% of the children grew up to become successful students and adults many of them surpassed peers from more privileged backgrounds. We also have a natural tendency to return to a stable level.TheHedonic Treadmilltheorydescribes how, after either negative or positive events, we usually get back to a relatively stable level of happiness. External events can boost or harm our emotional state. But, after some time, we get used to that new level and then ret urn to ournormallevel of happiness.Change, regardless if its positive or negative, doesnt kill you.Resistance is asignalResearchby Rosabeth Moss Kanter identified ten key reasons why people resist change. Not surprisingly, most of them are emotional. But theres an underlying theme our need to be in control. Most of the times, we see change as something that happens to us, rather than us being part of it.Change makes us feel off-center our first response is usually to do whatever we can to return the way the world was before. We feel a loss of control, so we do whatever is possible to regain mastery over our lives. The paradox is that we want to be in control of something that we cant fully control. Most of the things in life are out of our control. But, we can manage our decisions and emotional reaction resistance is not a natural behavior then, but a choice. Our ability to adapt is more natural We must learn tocontrol less and trust more.Fear to change is a signal that a window of opp ortunity has opened in front of you Inaction can be more damaging. As Seth Godin wrote, By the time the fear subsides, it will be too late. Someone else will have already done it, it will already be said or it will be irrelevant. The reason youre afraid is that theres leverage here, something that might happen. Which is exactly the signal youre looking for.Resistance is also signal that our identity might be at risk.Research showsthat loss of identity is a key barrier to collaboration among groups People dont want to lose the sense of who they are by opening up their work rituals. We believe that, by changing our behaviors, we change who we are. Or, even worse, we think we cannot adopt new habits because thats not who I am.If you want to improve your fitness, labeling yourself as Im in bad shape wont help you start exercising. You must separate your identity from your behavior. That you like sleeping until late doesnt make you a lazy person either that shouldnt hold you from changing your habits.Labels are deceiving they oversimplify who we are. They get us stuck in our present reality instead of liberating all our possibilities. You are not fixed, but fluid. The brain can be trained to create new neural connections and turn what initially seemed daunting into something familiar. The mind can also be trained to accept, understand, andmanage our emotions and thoughts(without suppressing them or letting our feelings take over). As a change instigator, Ive seen teams dramatically transform their relationship with change in just a couple of hours when you help them understand their emotions, and providea safe space and toolsto address those.Part of our confusion about change has to do with low self-awareness we are detached from the natural rhythms of life. We are so obsessed with science, stats, and measuring everything that we lost connection with our common sense. We are continually becomingChange is a sign that we are alive. The world is dynamic, not static. Fighti ng impermanence or change is going against the basic rules of nature.Refusing to grow up may be a form of rebellion. But really growing up could be a revolution.- SusanNeimanBeing and becoming are united they define the path of life. Being represents our relationship with the now becoming, our relationship with our future. The future will happen to us regardless. External events will affect our perceived stability People are not under your control. Their decisions will have positive or negative consequences in your life. You cant alter that. But, you can change how you react to it.Instead of trying to control change we need to allow it to become.Everything that happens to us shapes our lives. And then, we return to a new normal. The less we resist that transition, the better well be.As Mankutimma said, Even if the floods cause the seas to unite drowning the land in between. Even if the forest is covered in fog. Do not let go of your inner tranquility. Do not feel anxious. The seas w ill recede. The fog will clear up. There is an end to everything good or bad.We must have an open relationship with the future. Resisting change doesnt allow us to benefit from all the possibilities that the future can bring. Personal growth is about becoming to continually be learning, growing, evolving, and transforming.Make space for things to happen. When we resist, we block our future. When we adapt, we keep the door open to new experiences. We cant change reality, but we can change our attitude.Take water for example the most changing element in nature. Rain for a farmer is a blessing, but a disturbance for tourists visiting a new city. The roar of big waves can be exciting for a surfer, but a worry for a man with little kids.Embracing change is about becoming like water we cannot control the environment, but we can choose how we adapt to it.Bruce Lee said it best,Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a w ay around or through it.Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash.Be water, my friend. This article originally appeared on Medium. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Ask Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job Offer
Ask Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job OfferAsk Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job OfferAsk Yourself These Questions Before You Accept the Job OfferBefore accepting the job offer, ask yourself these eight questions to enaya its the right fit.Editors Note This article was originally published on our sister site, TopInterview.Congratulations You secured a job offer. After crafting a catchy cover letter, optimizing your resume, and acing the interview, the company has decided youre the perfect fit for the job. But now its your turn to ask Is this job the perfect fit for me?Its tempting to quickly blurt out YES and accept the offer on the spot, especially when youre eager for a new opportunity. But its important to carefully consider whats on the table before signing your new contract.Ask yourself these eight questions before accepting the job.1. Am I excited about the job?If youre looking for a new job, theres a reason. Maybe you feel stuck in your curren t position, you moved to a new city, or you were let go. These situations make it easy to feel stuck or even desperate.Yet, dont let these feelings push you to accept a job offer without careful consideration. Ask yourself Am I excited about this job, the company, and the people Ill work with? Or am I excited because I received an offer? If you find the answer is the latter, give yourself more time to find an opportunity that truly thrills you.2. Will this job bring me closer to achieving my career goals? You probably heard this question in your job interview and you probably hated it but its time to honestly ask yourself where you want to be in five years, even 10 years. Is this position going to help you get there? If you find the job wont help you advance toward your career goals, then maybe its worth reconsidering.3. What will my new day-to-day look like?Taking a new job means your life is going to change. First, carefully consider these changes within your professional life. Mak e sure you understand what your new duties will be and that you have a good idea of what your day-to-day tasks will entail. Will the work fulfill you? Help you acquire new skills? Push you to the next level of your career?Second, think about how this new job will affect your personal life. Consider your commute time and your schedule. Will this new job require you to hire a nanny? Work overtime? Is it worth it?4. Do I erleichterung the companys mission? You dont want to accept a position within a company that has a mission you dont support. You should have gotten a good feel for this as you researched the company before your interview and after asking the hiring manager questions. Now, take the time to make sure you feel good about the work youll be doing. Chances are, your gut will kick in when thinking about this question.5. Will I fit into the companys culture?Although fitting in feels more like the concern of a high school student, its just as important in your professional life. During your interview, did you take note of the company culture? The people who work there? The style? The atmosphere? Ethical standards?Remember, theres a chance you might spend more time with these people than with your family, so make sure you feel like you can fit in with ease.Related 5 Ways to Evaluate Company Culture During a Job Interview6. Is there room to grow? You dont want to hop into a position where, after a year, you feel stuck and like youre spinning your wheels. After all, that might be the reason youre seeking this new job opportunity in the first place.Once again, revisit your interview. If the manager didnt explicitly talk about career growth, did you ask? Will the company support your eagerness to grow and advance? If not, you might find yourself in this same position three years from now.7. What do the benefits look like?Although we might not want to admit that money helps make our decisions, it usually does. Take a good look at your salary offer as well as the b enefits. Do a quick cost analysis, breaking down the salary, health insurance, paid time off, sick policy, and retirement plan.Hows this company compare to your current or past positions? Typically, theres wiggle room, so polish your negotiating skills before signing the contract.8. Will this job make me happier? Now that youve considered the logistics, ask yourself one last question Will this job enhance my life and make me happier? You might have a gut feeling answering this question, but if you need, jot down a pros and cons list. Include all the questions listed above. Talk with your mentors, your significant other, your family anyone who can help you gain additional perspective.Accepting a new job is a big move, so be sure you feel good about your decision.Looking to find a new job, but not sure if your resume is up to the task? Customized for Comfort
Customized for Comfort Customized for Comfort Customized for ComfortBuildings use about half the energy in the United States, and close to half of that powers heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.Next time youre at work, stroll around and youll binnensee why. The spacious lobby, high-ceilinged rooms, empty office spacestheyre all typically heated to about 70 F or cooled to about 73 F. Thats incredibly wasteful, says Edward Arens, director of the Center for the Built Environment, an industry-university research consortium based at the University of California, Berkeley.Buildings are way overdesigned and overconditioned for what people actually need, he said. Arens aims to change that. In March, at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit in National Harbor, MD, he and his colleagues presented a personalized comfort system a set of devices that warm or cool parts of the body that are especially sensitive to heat or cold. Theyre designed to let workers maintain the tempe rature they prefer, no matter how warm or cool the office is, and they cut building energy costs dramatically.A workstation equipped with a personal comfort system. Image University of California, BerkeleyThe systems components include an under-desk foot warmer that uses an average of 20 W, a 5 W wrist warmer and a heated mouse that keep hands warm, 2 W heated insoles, and a 1 W desk fan that blows a light breeze across the workers face from as much as six feet away.Arenss team also hacked a commercial ergonomic office chair to heat or cool the body for an office workers comfort, using heating coils in the seat and the back, an air plenum inside the chair, and a wicking, non-insulating fabric. The combined wattage of the entire system is less than one-fiftieth of the 500-1000 W a typical building HVAC system consumes to heat or cool a single person. The chair also contains sensors that detect occupancy, temperature, and humidity, and relays that data via WiFi to the building managemen t system. This lets the building operator turn down the heat or reduce the AC in part or all of the building to save energy. To see how much energy the office chair saved, the researchers had 25 U.C. Berkeley office workers work in the customized chairs for 16 months and report twice daily whether theyfelt warm or cool, and if they were comfortable. Most workers preferred office temperatures between 74 F and 77 F in ordinary chairs, but four of five people in the customized chairs were fine with office temperatures as low as 68 F and as high as 80 F. This saved an astonishing 60 percent on building energy costs. An earlier six-month test of the foot warmers alone saved 48 percent of the total heating costs over a cool northern California winter. The Berkeley project is unique in tailoring their localized heating and cooling technologies to individuals, said Jennifer Gerbi, program director for ARPA-Es DELTA program, which funded the work. People feel comfort in different ways, Gerbi s aid,And I think theyre really amazing in looking at that.Learn about the latest trends in energy solutions at ASMEsPower Energy Conference and Exhibition. Hired! Change Your Resume; Change Your Life
Hired Change Your Resume Change Your LifeHired Change Your Resume Change Your LifeRelocation can be the answer to provide new opportunities.During stable economic times (common wisdom dictates), people change jobs to get more responsibility, more money or a better work environment. During bad economic times, they dont change at all unless their situation becomes unmanageable or theyre laid off.Only rarely, especially in a down economy, will a job seeker admit to having left one job simply to go to a new city wzu siche no job is waiting but a happier life may be. That is, you dont hear it often from anyone who has outgrown their 20s, let alone their 30s or 40s.Jill Greene, 52, did just that, and ended up in a new environment and a new job she loves. My husband and I lived in the Midwest our whole lives, and wed reached a point where we were both disenchanted with our jobs, said Greene, who worked as a marketing manager in Des Moines, Iowa, for a series of advertising agencies and veter inary pharmaceutical companies. We decided that if we were both going to look for new jobs, why do it in Des Moines? We just said, Were done with the cold and the snow and moved to Texas.Greene and her husband Ricky, a CPA, packed up the car and drove south, ending up between San Antonio and Austin, where they looked around to see if they liked the place, decided they did, rented a house, then drove back north to pick up the rest of their stuff. We have no kids all our family is back in Indiana, so we had nothing holding us back, Greene said. We did a lot of planning financially, so we knew how long we could brde. If neither of us had another job by July, we would re-evaluate if neither of us had anything by October, wed move back to Iowa, where we still had a house. It didnt take that long, although the insecurity of not having a job and shock of having to find one in a place where she was completely unknown made Greenes three months of unemployment more stressful than shed expected. She hadnt had to look for a job among strangers since getting into the marketing business after college. For 20-something years, my job moves were due to somebody recruiting me based on my experience they knew me or my work, she said. For that first interview in Texas, I was very ill-prepared. I thought it would be just like before - it would be fine. They didnt know who I was and could not have cared less. Looking back on my resume and performance, they must have thought I was some kind of idiot.Greene spent days researching best-practices articles on how to do a job interview, how to write a resume and how to search for jobs online. She realized she had spent years helping companies market products but never thought about how to market herself.A resume evaluation from Ladders helped turn that corner. The woman who evaluated my resume implied it was a wonder I got any calls back because my resume was in such bad shape, Greene said.Greenes resume listed her jobs and education but di dnt put the highlights of her career up front or emphasize her most visible strengths and accomplishments. It also didnt create a recognizable person or set of skills that would catch the eye of a recruiter or hiring manager faced with dozens or hundreds of resumes.I sat down and really rewrote it and took a really hard, honest look at myself, Greene said. I had to dig back and look at my accomplishments over time. A lot of things I had done I hadnt thought that much about at the time, so I hadnt written anything down. I had to go back and remember all that and describe it and why it was important. It was a real shock. Her resume consultant identified specific accomplishments to highlight not just that Greene had helped launch a product, but that it was a USDA-regulated product the company was able to ship in an unusually quick 18 months, and that after X number of months on the market the product garnered Y amount of sales. If I Can Sell a Toothbrush for a Cat It was all about spec ific ways you helped a company move forward, Greene said. And in the interview, too, you have to walk in and tell them exactly what you can do for them and tell about a time in the past that you did that for someone else. I told them once I had worked for a company that among other things made toothpaste and toothbrushes for dogs and cats. I said, If I can sell a toothbrush for a cat, I can sell anything. As it turned out, being able to sell things for animals if not dogs and cats was the key to landing a new job in marketing at Applied Biosystems, which makes products designed to sequence and analyze DNA and RNA samples, often for companies diagnosing sick animals or making drugs or other health-related products for them.Applied Biosystems posted this job that said they needed someone with an animal-science degree who had done marketing with animal products, Greene said. I pulled it off and said, This is who I am. Greene graduated from Purdue University with a degree in animal sci ence, which covers most of the health and biochemistry issues that affect agribusiness diseases and medicines for cattle and chickens, animal biochemistry and other topics critical to those running commercial farms and ranches. She spent her career in Iowa working mostly for companies marketing products and pharmaceuticals to animals usually farm animals rather than dogs and cats. So when Applied Biosciences needed marketing help for a small division in Austin selling products designed for veterinary diagnostic labs trying to identify avian flu or salmonella in farm animals, the match seemed perfect. The recruiter told me, and this is the first time I ever heard this, that they werent even talking to any other candidates, because they didnt expect to find me, Greene said. She got the job with little drama during the interview process and has been in love with it ever since.Much of the reason it went so smoothly, though, is that she prepared for it using the advice shed gotten from Lad ders and other sites. You want to be humble, but in this situation, you just cant. You have to dig hard and find the one or two things you can do for them, she said. I asked them to give me a specific challenge they had, the hardest thing theyre facing. Based on that, I could say Heres something I did in the past to solve a similar herausforderung and what I would do to solve this one. Its almost like consulting advice you run the risk of being way off-base, but even if you are, they like that you have opinions. The company must have liked what she said shes currently working on the marketing plan for the product her hiring manager brought up in the interview. (It has not yet been announced.)What she didnt encounter was any hint that her new company was uncomfortable with her age or that any other companies she interviewed with were, either.I did have one friend recommend that I just take all the dates off my resume, which drives some people crazy, and put one thing in there like ment ioning I had run a half-marathon last year, that shows youre really healthy and energetic and no one will even think about the fact that youre over 50, she said.Another trick that worked well was to remember the kinds of books on the shelf of the hiring managers she interviewed. At Applied Biosystems, one manager had a marketing-theory book called Blue Ocean Strategy How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant by W. Chan Kim and Rene Mauborgne.I didnt have it, but I went out and bought a copy and skimmed it, she said. So in my follow-up note I was able to say I thought they needed to pursue a Blue Ocean strategy to differentiate themselves and what that meant and make some suggestions on how to do it.It worked. So did Texas. Greenes husband has put off finding full-time work to act as general contractor on a house the two are building. On the day she spoke to a reporter from Ladders, it was 38 and partly cloudy in Des Moines 75 degrees and sunny in Austin. I have yet to put on a jacket this year, Greene said. I just love it.

How to Transition From Military to Tech Career
How to Transition From Military to Tech Career How to Transition From Military to Tech Career Robert Half Technology conducted a panel interview with three military veterans on our staff in an effort to better understand some of the challenges veterans face in finding new and meaningful careers upon leaving the service, and how they transitioned from military to civilian jobs. Here, we begin a two-part series of QAâs based on that interview. (You can find part two of the series here.) The panelists included Zach Torre, a former Army sergeant with experience in networking security, fiber optic repair, and transmission operation, now working as a network operations specialist; Jim Lantz, whose government and military career spanned more than two decades, including stints as a detachment commander, exchange officer and Middle East policy planner, currently working as an IT portfolio manager; and Philip Bull, a former Air Force satellite communications technician and unit deployment manager now working as a senior tech asset management coordinator. In our first post, we discuss the many assets these professionals bring to their respective Information Technology teams. We also take a look at how veterans can prepare before separation, and after, to market themselves and their skills - many of which are transferable and in high-demand across industries. 1. How do you plan ahead for the move from military to civilian jobs? Zach Torre: Resume writing, cover letters, networking and company research all can be done before you leave the military. In my case, planning for finding a job was easy - working with a recruiting agency like Robert Half Technology made the transition smooth for me. Jim Lantz: The onus is upon the service member to take the transition assistance training thatâs offered prior to separation - attend the classes, do the homework and really prepare yourself to leave. I did the homework. I had a multiple types of resumes based on the jobs I was pursuing. I was networking with friends, family, colleagues and even people I didnât know. 2. How important are the resume and education? Jim Lantz: Both are important. You never know where your resume may end up. I emailed my resume to an IBM executive in Southern California. He saw the potential I had and emailed it to some of his business colleagues, and eventually it came across our CIOâs desk in the San Francisco Bay Area. He looked at it and said, wow, this guy doesnât have a background in IT, but I bet he could help me in this particular job (project and finance management). Philip Bull: I landed several interviews simply because I had a degree. One recruiter told me he was leaning toward an applicant with more job experience, but he wanted to talk to me because I had a degree, an impressive resume and portfolio. 3. Why a career in Information Technology? Philip Bull: I fell into IT asset management in the last three years of my military career. I joined what was previously a one-man shop. The commander came in and said I need you to fix this program. The inspectors came back afterwards and said this is one of the best programs weâve seen in the Air Force. I got lucky. Robert Half Technology recruited me three years ago and Iâm still here. Zach Torre: The tech field is always progressing. It keeps you wanting to learn more. Consumer tastes and the tools they are using are constantly evolving. And thatâs why Iâm here. Maybe Iâll figure out a way to develop something that no oneâs developed yet. 4. What are the most transferable skills you build in the military? Philip Bull: For so much of my career, I was in positions where I was writing procedures and policies. And while I may not have been directly supervising people, I was indirectly supervising them and affecting their careers. Itâs those skills that I developed over time that helped me in my job search. Also, the military has an adapt-and-overcome mentality that transferred well to IT because technology is always changing. Jim Lantz: Soft skills are key - the ability to learn, the ability to lead and the ability to communicate are skills that are valuable in any job, but particularly in the tech industry. I told my boss when I interviewed I had limited experience with technology, but over the course of my career I learned Arabic and worked extensively in the Middle East, a place very different from where I grew up, so I was pretty sure I could learn IT. I think he felt confident in my ability to learn and gave me a chance. 5. Any advice for other vets considering jobs in IT? Philip Bull: Learn how to translate your technical skills into IT skills because thatâs whatâs going to get you noticed. But also learn how to sell your soft skills. The technical stuff is impressive, but itâs going to be the soft skills that will get you the job. Zach Torre: Expect to start at the bottom, but work your way up quickly. The technical piece isnât as important as you convincing the interviewer that youâve got the ability to learn. And thatâs something weâve all proven in the military. If youâve got the ability to teach us, weâve got the ability to learn. Robert Halfâs Career Opportunities for Veterans - This website features job-search tools for the move from military to civilian jobs. In addition to job listings, Robert Half has a wide range of resources for helping veterans find jobs. Additional resources may be found at the Four Block Foundation, a New York City-based nonprofit organization offering career development and transition support services to returning veterans and their families. How you end your message or note is important, too. A professional closing like âSincerely,â âBest regards,â or âWith appreciationâ will add a nice finishing touch to your communication. The Benefits of Sending a Thank-You Note When youre job searching, youll have many different opportunities to say thank you to those who help you, and to prospective employers. For example, when you write a thank-you note after an interview, the gesture shows appreciation for the employerâs interest, time, and attention, reiterates your enthusiasm and interest in the job opening, and reminds the employer about your qualifications and experience. Thank-you notes are a good opportunity to bring up something you may have forgotten to mention during the interview, or to follow up with additional information that the employer has requested. Usually, an interviewer will explain next steps in the process and when to expect to hear back from the company. If they did not discuss this, or you have yet to hearfrom them, use your thank-you letter as an occasion to follow up. Doing so in athank-you note can express your gratitude and show your unwavering interest inthe position while simultaneously checking in on the process. Review Thanks Thank-you notes can be handwritten, typed, or emailed, depending on preference and circumstance. Thanking someone for acting as a reference for you, or for letting you shadow them at their job, doesnât require the swift delivery that an interview thank-you would (where the hiring process is going to move along quickly, requiring you to send your thanks immediately after your interview). Timing is almost as important as what you say. An email will make an immediate impression. Thats key if youre in contention for a job, especially at a medium-sized to large company. If time isnt of the essence, consider sending a handwritten card or note. That gives the reader a tangible reminder of your appreciation. A small business or a colleague may look kindly on a handwritten note, while a corporate contact will probably expect, and prefer, an emailed note. Review these thank-you note samples for a variety of situations, and then choose an appropriate phrase to include in your personalized thank-you note.

Ad Agency Names Have Undergone a Transformation
Ad Agency Names Have Undergone a Transformation Ad Agency Names Have Undergone a Transformation Its surprising to think that in an industry that makes its bread and butter with creativity and originality, advertising agencies are home to some of the most boring company names on the planet. Its fair to say that only law firms rival this completely uninspired approach to naming. Its been said that self-promotion is one of the hardest things for any agency to do and do well, and that is clearly evidenced by the bland and banal name choices being made. The formula, at least for the last 60 to 70 years, appears to be: founder surname 1 founder surname 2 agency name. This is modified to become a laundry list of partners as they join the company, or are promoted. The Biggest Players Have The Most Boring Names Take a look at the top 25 advertising agencies around the world in 2016, listed by revenue. These are the big-name ad agencies with blue-chip clients. Walter Thompson, New York Wunderman, New YorkYR, New YorkWeber Chandwick, New YorkEdelman, Chicago Still awake? Congratulations. To anyone other than shareholders in these firms, the names are about as memorable and exciting as a cold bowl of porridge. With one exception (Engine Group), Its just a laundry list of boring acronyms, dull suffixes and blatant attempts to raise the egos of the founders. An agency as creative as Bartle Bogle Hegarty, for instance, may not get very far today with such an average and forgettable moniker. In fact, for an agency that used to have words are a barrier to communication as its screensaver, it sure did put a lot of them in the company name. Wouldnt something more creative, and short, have been better? Something that illustrated the creative nature of the agency, which is very creative. But it seems to have been the case, in the sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties, for agencies to go with the standard names above the door approach. Even the best agencies ever to grace the industry, including Doyle Dane Bernbach, Ogilvy Mather, and TBWA, all suffered from I want to be famous! syndrome. This is a classic example of ego trumping the greater good. In any situation where names make up the title of an agency or business, its inevitable that someone will leave and someone else will join, or get promoted. Its why you end up with ridiculous agency names like AMVBBDO. Seriously, thats just a meaningless jumble of letters to most people. If you have a more conceptual name, none of that matters. And modern agencies know this all too well. That Was Then. This is Now. (Thankfully.) More and more agencies are starting to come around to a more creative way of thinking. Solid, memorable and creative agency names that currently populate the industry include: 72 And SunnyStrawberry FrogTaxiWexley School for GirlsBig SpaceshipThe BankPocket HerculesKids Love JetlagOmeletDavid GoliathWalrusMotherMoosylvaniaCreatureBlammo WorldwideThe Glue SocietyFarmBonehookCatapultHugeMosaicOrganicZenithCactusCritical Mass The difference between the two lists is night and day. While one, the former, looks more at home at a boring fundraiser for lawyers, the other is an exciting collection of agencies that conjure a story beyond the name. Take Blammo Worldwide as a prime example. They clearly have a sense of humor, an easy-going approach, but also relate that theyll have an impact. Imagine if they had instead gone with the surnames of the four major players in the agency â" McNab, Gee, Simon, and Emslie. Would that even have garnered a second look? Perhaps in their day, clients wanted a sense of structure and a solid foundation from their ad agencies, and so name soup was a good choice to attract clientele. Its worth noting that one of the most creative agencies that have ever existed, Doyle Dane Bernbach, was name soup. These days, it seems that the new kids on the block are looking at things a little differently. Sure, theyre not in the top 25, and probably never will be considering the considerable size, history, and billings of their much higher paid competitors. But with agencies like Mother and Taxi making big waves, they should not be surprised to see themselves nipping at the heels of the big boys. So, in the interests of keeping this industry fresh and proving it rather than saying it, heres a challenge to 24 of those 25 top agencies â" rename yourself. It doesnt have to take a long time, or even mean anything. Choose a random word or phrase; heres a list to help you out: AFTERSHOCK, VOLCANO, BLITZ, WHALE, ALLIGATOR, PHANTOM, CHARADE, BLINKER, CYCLE, STATION, HACKSAW, DRONE, ARRIVAL, GOLD, JUGGLER, PLUG, SCREWDRIVER, YELL, COAL, AIRPORT, CELLAR, TENT, CROWN, ZEBRA, SPONGE, SODA, BOUNDARY, CREAM, RIVER, BOOKWORM, MINT, PORTER, CHERRY, FRICTION, HEAT, GRENADE, and ATLAS.

FlexJobs.com
FlexJobs.com FlexJobs.com FlexJobs.com promises scam-free, personally reviewed flexible work leads, and it delivers. But whether there are enough to justify the fee would depend on your line of work and motivation for finding a job. While many of the job postings on FlexJobs.com are available free elsewhere, FlexJobs makes them much more convenient to find because it reviews them and effectively filters out work at home scams. FlexJobs is also unique in that the site attracts a lot of job posters looking to fill remote career-oriented positions. This is great for individuals looking for flexible, resume building work that can pay well. Of course however, convenience has a price. In this case, its $14.95/month or $49.95/year. Pros Screens out work at home scams wellWide variety of positions availableListings are well designedCompany descriptions provided for most employersListings link to original job posting if availableSearches allow users to save a list of jobsNo ads and is Better Business Bureau accreditedEspecially useful for building a freelance client base Cons Job categories can overlap and listings can become somewhat overwhelmingJobs postings are not completely exclusive and are published elsewhereFee ($14.95 monthly or $49.95 yearly) Description The site has approximately 100 new job listings each day.The site offers listings for remote, part-time, freelance, and flexible jobs with an emphasis on flexibility in schedule or location. The site offers 52 categories to search from. Popular categories include administrative, communications, data entry, editing, legal, telemarketing, and web design. The site also offers a variety of resources for job searchers including career coaching, guides, company descriptions, interesting job lists, job-seeker articles, blogs, and tips. Companies with Listings Companies posting jobs changes every day. On the Company Guide page, users can search for employers in a variety of categories. The siteâs list of top companies with job postings includes Kelly Services, UnitedHealth Group, Real Staffing, ATT, and Robert Half International.Remote companies: The top remote job posters include UnitedHealth Group, Aetna, Kaplan, and CyberCoders.Part-time jobs: Companies topping the list for part-time job openings includes ATT, Kaplan, and RetailData. Review - FlexJobs.com FlexJobs is one of a few online subscription sites offering a plethora of job listings. While it may not substantiate the fee for casual job searchers, it can be very valuable for users looking to find work relatively quickly. Many of the site listings have a quick hiring process. The site is also known for remote flexibility which means users can apply and potentially interview all through electronic means. The site offers three different subscription options. Users can choose one-month, three-month, or year-long access. The one-month subscription is $14.95. The three-month subscription offers a lower monthly price at $29.95. The one-year access costs $49.95 which works out to be only $4 per month. The overlap in categories is the most common complaint with this site. While the overlap is understandable (freelance can mean full- or part-time work), itâs not really necessary to have both a Medical and a Health category as it can cause users to waste time with somewhat confusing search results. The same problem can be found in searching writing/editing jobs as they are spread across nearly eight different categories with a wide range of variance in each. If you are not sure about the fee, you can test out the site for free. This allows you to do some searching and grouping however the fee is required to apply. If you dont want to miss any of what youve paid for, the best way to use the site is probably to check all the new listings daily. You can also identify a few of your top search categories and follow by categories as well since each category lists jobs by the most recent posting date.

But after a few weeks, you notice that unlike everyone else, one person repeatedly draws negative attention to how you decide to live your life.Hereâs how to handle colleagues who live to see you sweat, while learning personal information about you that youâd rather keep private.Remember that you donât owe them anythingFirst of all, itâs your life, and you donât have to tell anyone at work about things youâd rather not get into. While authenticity at work is crucial, thereâs a difference between sharing appropriate things about yourself here and there in an effort to connect with your colleagues, and being forced to spill the beans on sensitive topics. So donât give your nosy coworker all the power - this should make it easier for you to stand up for yourself.Try using a few of these phrasesAlison Green, author of the Ask a Manager bl og, suggests using these lines (among others) to stop nosy coworkers in their tracks:ââIâd rather not get into it at work â" I like to keep that type of thing private,â âThatâs between me and my husband/wife/accountant,â and âThatâs awfully personal!'â are just a few she recommends telling a colleague who âdoesnât get your first few hints.âShow them that itâs time to move onLifehacker readers told the publication about the most annoying things that happen to them at work when the site posted a call for them, and then the site came up with âa few of the most common themesâ and recommendations for irritating people and situations. The section on âThe Hovererâ (someone who comes to your desk for something and fails to leave for a while once done), features advice that might also just work for nosy coworkers.âIf for some reason you canât tell a coworker that you you need to get back to work, then offer a few subtle cues that the conversation is o ver. Weâve outlined a few of these cues before, including: ask your chatty coworker to pick up some of your slack, talk about topics they donât know, or be as uninteresting as possible.âRemember, you have the power to shut down nosy coworkers who make you feel uncomfortable.

Including Short-Term Jobs on Your Resume
Including Short-Term Jobs on Your Resume Including Short-Term Jobs on Your Resume Including Short-Term Jobs on Your Resume While we all hope to find that one, career-making position, chances are that on the road to employment success youâre going to have a couple of hurdles or temporary stops along the way. In a job market increasingly driven by Freelance, part-time and similar limited duration positions, its not unheard of to include a variety of short-term jobs on your resume. The trick is in including them properly as to be an asset and not a detriment to your job prospects. Before we get into specifics, its important to note that you donât need to include every job youâve ever held on your resume. Some positions (like that summer you spent selling ice cream at your grandparentsâ roadside creamery) arenât really relevant to your potential career in manufacturing computer components. Including a large number of short term jobs can also give you the appearance of being flighty, unloyal, uncommitted or various other red flag characteristics. If you do include short term positions, thereâs several ways to explain, support or otherwise mitigate any negative reaction a potential employer may have. List Positions by Years While the typical format has you listing specific months, and even days, you were employed in any given position, if you have a great deal of short term work, consider listing by year instead. Several listings listed simply as having been in 2010 leaves off the fact that you were only employed for a month or similarly short period of time. It also gives your potential employer the chance to ask for specific dates during the interview which can open the door for discussion. Contract and Temporary Work If your short term positions are the byproduct over contract or temporary work, be sure to call this out. Most employers will understand the frequent turnaround with these and wonât knock you points. Develop Multiple Resumes If you have a large selection of short term jobs, consider leaving some of them off your current resume and instead developing multiple versions depending on which are relevant to your desired position. Be cautious about having too many employment gaps and do your research as to which positions would be the most relevant to your interviewer. When it Doubt, Leave it Off When youâve held a job for a short period of time and it isnât relevant for the position you are interviewing for, consider leaving it off. The old axiom âmore is lessâ rings true here. If the job doesnât add any value to your resume, it doesnât need to be included. Exercise caution again on potential job gaps when choosing to remove too many positions from your resume. List Similar Jobs Together Lastly, if you worked in a series of related short term jobs, consider listing them together in one block of time to save space and avoid the appearance that youâre a job hopper. Sales associate at a clothing store and then at the local coffee shop can all be grouped under one âRetail Salesâ header and the time listed as one continuous block. However you decide to handle short term jobs, itâs important that you always include accurate and honest information in your resume. Stretching the truth when it comes to the length of time you were at any given position can come back to bite you if your employer chooses to check references or verify employment. If the question comes up during your interview, answer openly and consider it a compliment that you had short term employment listings but were still made the initial cut as a qualified candidate. Providing accurate information and properly listing and including short term positions can help eliminate any negative connotations and will see you landing that big career move in no time.
